Monday 22nd June

Are you in it?
The importance of identification - is this an essential factor for us to like or dislike a film? How can a writer play with the identification? How can it help a narrative? If we can’t at all identify in an audiovisual work can we still like it? We decided to take this matter seriously and to bring a panel of experts to approach this important development skill in a film.

Tuesday 23rd June

Youngsters on screen
Very often we watch films in which the main characters are very young and many breathtaking works have been done on such premises (Piano, City of God, to name a couple). But what is there, that are so specific in portraying the youth as main characters? How difficult is it to reflect their views on film? Can a film be a reference to a whole generation of youngsters? How defying is it to direct actors with little life experience?

National cinema: breaking the boundaries of different cultures
Showing a film to a new audience, country or culture can at times be close to a nightmare. It has been proven to sometimes be a very difficult task even for films where the same language is spoken. For example, Portuguese films are often subtitled in order to be understood in Brazil and these difficulties can even be felt inside the same country - many Italian productions have to be subtitled in order to be seen in different regions of Italy. This panel is about how we can overcome these difficulties where the culture is slightly different but even though similar. Cultural proximity will be approached, as well as cultural identity on film. Filmmakers who have felt these difficulties will address the subject and many other issues and solutions will be debated with the audience.

Wednesday 24th June

I’ve learnt it from a book: Adapting a book to the screen
Adapting books and stories to films - from high street successful books to underground short stories. Books have always been one of the most important sources of inspiration for films, but adapting a book to the screen can sometimes be like walking on eggs… What are the best techniques for the adaptation to be successful? A group of filmmakers and writers will present their various techniques and experience.

Cinematography
Cinematography has allowed us to present the most amazing images on screen. This art has the ability to take us away to another dimension. What is exactly the role of the cinematographer? When does the cinematographers work end and the directors work start? What is the cooperation between these two figures in the teamwork? This lecture will provide an insight from the point of view of the cinematographer regarding the work on set. We will be presented with valuable experience of recognised cinematographers.

Thursday 25th June

Away from Home
The advent of globalisation makes an increasing number of people live away from their home country. Can this ever-growing situation diminish the identification with the home culture, or can it intensify it? The goal of this session is to analyse our cultural background and analyse the (process of acculturation regarding filmmaking) integration of filmmakers in new cultures.

In the mood for music
Many times music can make a film unforgettable. Who does not recall the Wendy Carlos sound for Clockwork Orange, Vangelis for Blade Runner or thousands of other references in the History of Film? Music seems therefore to be an essential factor for a film to be successful, but how do we work with it in the best way possible? To what extend do the lyrics influence or clash with the films narrative? In this lecture we will present experiences and visions on how to turn music in your favour the best way possible, with a panel of experts widely recognised.

Firday 26th June

Biographical films – the new trend?
Recent years have shown a boom in this theme on the big screen, from the music scene: Ray Charles, Ian Curtis, Kurt Cobain, Johnny Cash, to historical figures such as Queen Elisabeth and Joan d’Arc. Can this be a new trend to be maintained? Are these people the reflection of countries culture? Are these projects a guarantee of success? What are the biggest challenges and difficulties in developing such production, from writing the script to the first public presentation and reactions? A board of artists that have been involved in such productions will present their visions and experience and give advices to those who wish to pursue this trend.

Documentaries, new opportunities and challenges
Documentaries have in recent years been given a bigger exhibition to the spotlight, taking the big screen in many occasions. The phenomenon is recent, but what makes a documentary interesting? And how can you show your culture in a documentary? Is the documentary making growing? The panel of experts will present their views on these matters and analyse, with the participants, the future for this genre and for projects within the world of documentary making.

Saturday 27th June

Actor\director relation
The history of cinema has seen astonishing actors perform on the screen. Behind this there is always a specific relationship with the directors, obviously each one with its own methods. This relationship starts with the casting and sometimes lasts for more than one feature. We will present the experience of established directors and actors and how they relate to each other.

room 2 – Workshop Room Junta de Freguesia Espinho

Monday 22nd June

Copyright law
Sometimes the rights and laws behind a film can be confusing and very often people are unaware of their rights, how to protect them and even how to get other copyrighted material into their own works (music for example). This workshop will give the participants an insight of all issues concerning the production of a film, acquisition and protection of rights providing participants with the knowledge that is usually ignored until the very moment it is needed.

Tuesday 23rd June

Digital film making
How big is the revolution? What are the new challenges?
New technology is now with us and the advent of digital film making is an ever growing reality. Production costs have been slashed and scenes can be watched just after being shot. But for an unprepared film maker this technology can be confusing and sometimes frustrating as well, if not used correctly. In this panel we will analyse the new technology and advantages of this matter, opening doors and showing possibilities.

Pitching sessions training
Selling your idea is not often the most interesting thing for a film maker, but almost always extremely necessary. In this program we will help you to be on top of the game and give you the tools to excel in this area.

Wednesday 24th June

Latin America-Europe
The recent history of film has seen much collaboration between Europe and Latin America in different co-productions, being territories traditionally close to the Iberian Peninsula language wise. Are these preferable candidates for intercontinental collaborations? This panel will analyse recent partnerships between these two regions and demonstrate the cultural connections.

Short films and music videos - boundaries?
Short films as music videos have established themselves in recent years as a platform for experimenting with new boundaries and new techniques. At the same time short films have been pushed to new spots and alternative exhibitions, meanwhile music videos grow in importance and artistic presentation. What are the boundaries of these formats? What are their contribution for the evolution of cinema, and more importantly, how can these formats help the youth to express, being a lowers cost medium? These are some of the question approached in this session

Thursday 25th June

Editing
Here is where many consider the film to really be made. Sometimes the editing room is seen as the last salvation - sometimes it is and others not really. During this program an established editor will present its own techniques and show how it can be helpful in the future. Careful planning will also be analysed from the point of view of the editor, who also will point out the most common mistakes you can come across based on the years of experience. This is a program that will show us how editing can change the whole dynamic of the narrative. We will also focus on the relationship between the editor and the production team.

Artistic limitations: filming on difficult political environments
Filming in oppressive regimes, war zones or having limited information due to secrecy of certain subjects can be an intellectual dilemma for a filmmaker. This program will present experience from filmmakers who experienced such limitations and how they overcame it. We will also analyse the importance of the film in the resolution of these issues, promoting values such as freedom of speech, equality and democracy to name a few.

Firday 26th June

Filming in Europe
This discussion will give an overview of the position of filmmakers in Europe. Identity, financing and production will be matters addressed by the guest speakers who also will talk about their own body of work and the programmes and initiatives they represent. The panel will also go into the local and global promotion of European films.

Promotion
Promoting is very often the key factor for a success and this lecture will analyse the techniques in the promotion of a film with a panel of experts large in experience in the area. High budget promotion techniques will be analysed at the same time as low budget breakthrough strategies that have been successful in the past. How can new media be a key player in the promotion techniques and how can a film maker gain from it? The participants will be introduced to the knowledge of all essential factors in this area, as well as be given motivation to reach new promotion techniques to lower budgets.

Saturday 27th June

The relation between the critic and the artists
Oh well, love or hate? The right point being: it can’t be ignored. At some point everyone will have to face it. How important is the critic? How influential is the critic in a work? How can you work with it? More than anything, this session will create proximity between these two spheres, the artistic and the critic.
